Experts systems are being designed to aid the system operator and planner in making their decision in the midst of a large number of alarms or alternatives. Moreover, expert systems perform well when the problem cannot be easily formulated as a mathematical optimization or there are fuzzy criteria and constraints. Our interest is in exploiting these features of expert system in the area of security assessments, specifically contingency selection and voltage security assessment.
