Automatic Generation Control

The real time control of electric power systems includes the regulation of system frequency and scheduled power flows over transmission lines which link numerous independent operating entities into a supply network extending across the entire continent. It also includes the allocation of generation, for optimal use of available resources. Our research has led to significant advances in the state-of-the-art of Automatic Generation Control of interconnected electric power systems. Among our contributions in this area are the formulation and solution of the dynamic economic dispatch problem, the formulation and solution of the power system regulation problem as a multivariable tracking problem, and the development of an integrated generation control which coordinates the dispatch and regulation functions to enhance stability while retaining their functional separation. All of these developments were implemented and successfully tested on the Wisconsin Electric Power Company system.
